The Northern Rivers House

Set within the lush landscape of the Northern Rivers, this home has evolved gradually over many years; shaped not by a single renovation, but by changing lifestyles, thoughtful decisions and a desire to create spaces that feel calm, purposeful and enduring.

The living room was reimagined as a calm, contemporary retreat. A restrained palette, natural textures and carefully selected furnishings create a sense of quiet sophistication while allowing artwork and daylight to become the defining features of the space.

Rather than imposing a predetermined aesthetic, the approach has been one of careful refinement. Existing spaces have been reimagined with a lighter touch, balancing functionality with warmth while strengthening the connection between architecture, interiors and landscape.

The kitchen demonstrates how modest changes can have a significant impact. Light timber flooring, refined finishes and improved lighting create a brighter, more cohesive heart of the home without altering the original footprint.

Some of the interiors shown represent completed spaces, while others illustrate an ongoing design exploration—demonstrating how familiar rooms can continue to evolve through thoughtful intervention rather than major reconstruction.

Ultimately, the project reflects a belief that the most successful homes are not static. They adapt over time, responding to changing needs while remaining grounded in simplicity, authenticity and enduring design..

Sustainability is approached not as an applied layer, but through considered decisions: retaining existing materials, avoiding unnecessary replacement, and working with what is already there.

Over time, the house has adapted to accommodate different ways of living and working, including the integration of a home office. This ongoing evolution reflects a broader design philosophy—one that values longevity, flexibility and the ability for a home to grow with
its occupants.

Conceived as a place of rest and retreat, the main bedroom is defined by natural light, layered textures and a restrained palette. My favourite, crisp white linen, soft upholstery and carefully chosen artworks create a calm, restorative environment where comfort takes precedence over decoration. The result is a space that feels timeless, quietly luxurious and deeply connected to everyday living. Beautiful bedding has the power to transform a room—not simply through colour, but through how it reflects light, adds texture, and invites relaxation.

The main bathroom illustrates how thoughtful refinement can transform an everyday space. Light finishes, generous natural light and carefully considered detailing create a room that feels fresh, functional and quietly elegant. Rather than reinventing the space, the design focuses on improving the experience of daily living through simplicity and restraint.

Positioned between the kitchen and garden, the dining room celebrates natural light and indoor–outdoor living. Sheer linen curtains, warm timber furniture and a restrained material palette create an inviting setting for everyday meals and entertaining.

Sustainability has been approached as a process of considered editing rather than wholesale replacement. Existing materials have been retained wherever possible, layouts refined rather than reinvented, and new additions selected for their longevity, quality and timeless appeal.

Although compact in footprint, the ensuite was designed to feel light, uncluttered and enduring. White wall tiles and a neutral floor, concealed storage, and a restrained material palette create a sense of spaciousness, while natural daylight and tactile finishes introduce warmth and comfort. The result is a bathroom that feels both practical and quietly luxurious. And of course, my favourite white towels are ever ready after a luxurious shower.

Originally a secondary bedroom, the space has been reimagined as a welcoming guest retreat. Layered natural textures, soft linen and warm timber furnishings demonstrate how thoughtful editing can transform even the most modest room.

Although modest in size, the second bedroom demonstrates how thoughtful design can transform a space’s character. Rich navy textiles, warm timber furniture and carefully balanced lighting create a restful retreat that feels contemporary, comfortable and quietly sophisticated.

A house not designed all at once, but shaped over time—
layered, lived in and continuously evolving.
